What is RSS?
RSS is an abbreviation for ‘Really Simple Syndication’ and is used by Shiptalk to provide a news feed to third party websites, weblogs and newsletters online. You may choose to display all of our news headlines along with a short description of the news article itself and a link to the full version of the article on Shiptalk.com. Alternatively you may elect to receive only news articles that appear within a specific category of our news say for example, “Careers” or “Safety/Security”. This information is delivered as an XML file called RSS feed, RSS stream, or RSS channel. An orange rectangle with the letters XML or RSS is often used as a link to a site’s RSS feed.
How do I use RSS feeds?
Generally speaking it is a relatively simple task for your webmaster to incorporate our RSS feed into your website, weblog or online newsletter. The first thing you need is something called a news reader. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable applications. All allow you to display and subscribe to the RSS feeds you want.
Once you have chosen a news reader, all you have to do is to decide what content you want. You can subscribe to the feed in various ways, including dragging the URL of the RSS feed into your news reader or by cutting and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your news reader.
How do I get a News Reader?
There is a range of different news readers available and new versions are appearing all the time.
Different news readers work on different operating systems, so you will need to take this into account when you make your choice. Most newsreaders are free of charge and your webmaster should be able to help you choose the right newsreader for your purposes. Alternatively you will find a wealth of information on this subject when searching online.
