An oil tanker has been damaged by an explosion after a suspected attack near the mouth of the Persian Gulf, its owners have claimed.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, based in Japan, reported there was no oil leak after the blast on the VLCC M. Star, although one person had picked up a minor injury.
It says the ship was damaged due to “an explosion from a suspected attack from the outside” in the waters off Oman near the Strait of Hormuz. The strait leads into the Persian Gulf past Oman and Iran and is a travelling point for about 40% of the world’s oil tankers.
The US Navy’s Bahrain-based 5th Fleet has launched an investigation into the incident.
