Diploma in Ship Management
Course commences: 29th September 2010
The management of ships has undergone many major changes during the last twenty years. Most companies used to ‘do it all’ and operate with a completely vertically integrated management system providing support for all aspects of the vessels’operation. This enabled shipping companies to train future managers from within the company, and many seafarers started their shore careers as Marine Superintendents or Cargo Supers. Within the company structure, these future managers were supported and readily able to adjust from the enclosed management structure on a ship to the much wider environment and more complex issues that are encountered in the shore environment.
In recent years, competitive pressures have caused many companies to contract out some of their services through crewing of shipping management companies. This has removed the opportunity for many employees who would like to develop a career in ship management, whilst at the same time, the industry is crying out for good, competent managers.
Undertaking responsibility ashore means learning many new skills. Skilled officers make excellent managers but the knowledge prescribed to prove competence at sea leaves gaps in a number of disciplines required in an effective ship management company. Nowadays, seafaring schools and experience are no longer enough to obtain and retain a competitive edge.
Now enrolling twice a year, the Diploma in Ship Management is designed to equip potential ship managers with the skills required to manage ships and to be aware of the complexities faced in handling the problems of dealing with an international market. The course also explores the added responsibilities that managers have to take to ensure their fleet is operating safely. This Diploma will set you ahead of your colleagues.
All participants will study the core modules and there is a range of specialist modules to choose from which will help you to focus on particular complex issues of ship management. The examination will be based around your chosen specialist module.
The course is recognised by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) as contributing to the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) needs of its members and is also accredited by Middlesex University, where successful students can obtain up to 60 credits at level 3 to go towards further work-based learning qualifications if desired.
