The American ambassador to the Philippines said Thursday that the U.S. Coast Guard will help train their counterparts in Manila to help prevent maritime accidents.Ambassador Kristie Kenney said a U.S. Coast Guard expert will be stationed at the embassy in Manila to lead the safety training for ferry passengers. The assistance comes after three ferry mishaps this month.
One involved the collision of a wooden-hulled passenger ship with a steel-hulled fishing boat on Christmas Eve that sank the former and killed several passengers. Another ferry sank on Dec. 26 after being battered by strong waves.
However, Kenney admitted that the U.S. Coast Guard may not be helpful when it comes to retrieving bodies from sunken vessels. She said the agency gets contractors to do such work.
