An anti-piracy course will be part of the requirements for all Filipino seafarers to address the growing number of piracy cases in Somalia. After a tripartite meeting headed by the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole), Secretary Marianito Roque told reporters Thursday that the training will be provided separately by manning agencies to hopefully lessen the number of piracy cases.
“It teaches you how to deal with the situation if it happens and how to prevent it,” said Roque.
He clarified that seafarers should not be obliged to pay by their agencies.
The Labor chief added that he will personally order any manning agency to close down if proven it is earning money for the anti-piracy course.
According to Dole, there are about 260,000 Filipino seafarers today that would undergo this training, which will also help the department to “increase the level of qualification of the capacity of a seafarer” if in case a piracy situation confronts him.
